How 20 People, One Kitchen, and a Little Friendly Competition Brought a Team Closer Together

Team building has a reputation problem. Most people hear the phrase and immediately picture a forced trust fall or a conference room icebreaker that nobody asked for. The truth is, when it's done right, team building doesn't feel like team building at all — it feels like a genuinely great time. That's exactly what happened when the team at J Krug came through our doors on Easter Monday, April 4th, for a private cooking experience built just for them.

The Group
J Krug brought in 20 members of their insurance and HR team for a spring team building event. Like most groups, they weren't just looking for a night out — they wanted something meaningful. Something that would give their team a shared experience, a little healthy competition, and a reason to look at their coworkers a little differently on Monday morning. They also came in with a practical concern that a lot of groups have but don't always bring up: dietary restrictions. Their team included members who were gluten free, one with a peanut allergy, and a vegetarian. Before they ever set foot in our kitchen, our chefs worked directly with them to build a personalized menu that made sure every single person felt included and taken care of. As a strict no peanut and no tree nut kitchen, that level of care is already built into how we operate — it just meant we could say yes without hesitation.
The Experience
Once they arrived, the group dove straight into our Cooking Skills Challenge — our most popular private event format. The concept is simple but the execution puts everyone to the test. The group splits into smaller teams, each responsible for mastering their assigned courses that are taught by the chef. At the end, everything comes together on one plate, and our chef judges the results. There's a winner, there's some friendly trash talk, and there's a lot of laughing along the way.
For this event, J Krug chose our American-style menu. Each team worked from scratch to prepare Pan Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Tomato Salad, Zucchini-Wrapped Asparagus, and Herbed Potato Gnocchi. Three courses, one unified plate, and a time limit that kept the energy high from start to finish. We put the pressure on intentionally — not to stress anyone out, but because a little pressure has a way of cutting through the small talk and showing people who their coworkers really are. That's where the real bonding happens.
The Result
They came in as colleagues. They left as a team. Full bellies, big smiles, and the kind of shared experience that actually carries over into the workplace. When you've stood side by side in a kitchen trying to nail a gnocchi recipe under the clock, the walls come down pretty fast.
That's what a well-designed team building experience can do — and it's what we set out to create every single time a group walks through our door.
