Windland Food's Summer Intern Finale — They Came, They Cooked, They Conquered

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting 28 people from Windland Food here at Cooking Skills & Social for what turned out to be one of the most fun private events we've put together in a while — and it came with a pretty cool backstory.

This wasn't just a team dinner. It was the grand finale of their summer intern program. Think about that for a second — you spend your summer working hard, learning the business, and the company sends you out with a cooking challenge. That's the kind of send-off that actually sticks with you.

And stick with them it did.

The Challenge: Italian Cooking Skills Challenge

We set the group up with our Italian Cooking Skills Challenge menu — a focused, technique-forward spread that put everyone to work from the jump. Twenty-eight people, multiple stations, one kitchen. The energy in the room was exactly what you want to see at one of these.

Here's what they cooked:

Wilted Green w/ Grapefruit Olive Oil Dressing Finished with a white wine vinaigrette, this one set the tone. Light, bright, and a little unexpected — the grapefruit olive oil is a combination that surprises people every time. Getting the greens wilted just right without overdoing it is more technique than it sounds, and the groups knocked it out.

Tortellini w/ Brown Butter & Grape Tomato This was a station favorite. Brown butter sounds simple until you're standing over the pan watching it go from perfect to burned in about fifteen seconds — that's the lesson. Paired with grape tomato and tossed wide, it's a dish that rewards patience and focus. When it comes together, it's genuinely restaurant quality, and a lot of the groups got there.

Pappardelle Pasta w/ Garlic Pepper & Cream Sauce The big, bold closer. Wide pasta, a rich garlic pepper cream sauce, and the kind of flavors that fill a room. This one brought out the most debate between stations — everyone was convinced their version of the cream sauce was the best. Honestly, they were all pretty great.

Add-On — Cannolis The cannolis closed it out and were the highlight of the night for a lot of people in the room. There's something about filling a cannoli shell for the first time that just makes people genuinely happy. By the time dessert hit the table, the noise level told you everything you needed to know.

A Send-Off Worth Remembering

What made this event special wasn't just the food — it was the context. These interns spent a summer giving Windland Food their time, their energy, and their ideas, and the company wrapped it all up with an experience that said: we see you, and we wanted to end this right.

That's what private events at Cooking Skills & Social are built for. Not just a nice dinner — a moment. Something people actually talk about on the way home and remember six months later.

To everyone from Windland Food who came out — thank you for bringing the energy and trusting us with your finale. You all crushed it in the kitchen, and we hope to see you back.
