Forty-three guests. Thirty-one aprons. One very surprised dad.
This past weekend, we hosted one of our favorite kinds of private events at Cooking Skills & Social: a completely custom cooking experience designed around great food, great company, and celebrating someone special. The family arrived early to decorate and prepare for the surprise, and when their dad walked through the doors, he was greeted with cheers, balloons, and a kitchen full of family and friends ready to celebrate. From there, the party was on. Whether it's a birthday, holiday party, or corporate team building event, these are the moments we love creating at our Chicagoland cooking studio.
A Custom Cooking Class Built for Celebration
For this event, our chefs worked with the family to create a menu that was interactive, elevated, and approachable for guests of all cooking abilities. We kicked off the evening with handmade flatbreads topped with tomato butter, caramelized onions, and basil purée, including vegan options so everyone could enjoy the experience together. Guests even requested jalapeños and crushed red pepper on the side for a little extra heat — easy enough for our team.
The evening continued with make-your-own pizzas topped with mozzarella, basil, and tomato before moving on to one of the night's highlights: fresh pasta. Together, guests learned how to make filled tortellini from scratch, finished with brown butter and grape tomatoes, while our vegan guests enjoyed a basil, garlic, and spinach filling paired with olive oil and sautéed squash. Everyone also rolled out fresh pappardelle, served with roasted red pepper, basil purée, and parmesan cream sauce, alongside a completely dairy-free and egg-free vegan version. To finish, our chef team prepared a vegan coconut panna cotta topped with fresh strawberries and grilled peaches — the perfect ending to an unforgettable night.
Cooking Classes in Chicago That Work for Everyone
One of the things we love most about hosting private cooking classes in Chicago is making sure everyone feels included. This group had six guests requiring vegan options, and our chefs were able to create dishes that felt just as exciting and delicious as the originals. Dietary restrictions don't have to mean missing out, and that's one of the reasons our private events in Chicagoland are so popular. Whether your group needs vegan, vegetarian, or other accommodations, our chefs work with you to create a menu everyone can enjoy.
BYOB Means Your Party, Your Way
Of course, it wouldn't be much of a birthday party without drinks. Our BYOB option was the perfect fit for this group, who arrived with bottles of wine, whiskey, and hard seltzers ready to celebrate. We provide the chefs, the kitchen, the glassware, and the instruction — you bring your favorite drinks and your favorite people. The result feels less like renting a venue and more like hosting an unforgettable dinner party, except you don't have to cook or clean up afterward.
It's one of the many reasons guests choose Cooking Skills & Social for birthday parties, holiday parties, corporate team building events, and private cooking classes throughout Chicago and Chicagoland. Every event is customized to the people in the room, creating an experience that's equal parts celebration, education, and great food.
More Than a Cooking Class
What started as a surprise birthday quickly turned into a night of cooking, celebrating, and making memories together. Thirty-one guests cooked, forty-three guests celebrated, and everyone left full. If you're searching for cooking classes in Chicago, planning a holiday party, or looking for unique private events in Chicagoland, we'd love to help you create something custom.
Because the best meals aren't just about what you cook.
They're about who you share them with.
